Canada played their first international match against Japan in Japan in 1932, losing by just 9-8. The team is administered by Rugby Canada and are classified by the IRB as a tier two rugby nation. They are nicknamed the Canuacks and their emblem is the Maple leaf.

Canada have competed at every World Cup since the tournament was first staged in 1987. Canada achieved their best result to date at the World Cup in 1991, where they reached the quarterfinals. They also compete annually in the Churchill Cup against the second string sides of England and Scotland, as well as the New Zealand Maori, USA and from 2008 an Argentina selection.
