Edinburgh Gunners were originally founded in 1872, but as the modern professional outfit came into existence in 1996. For 2001-02 season they were amalgamated with Border Reivers, this being dropped the following season and until 2005-6 they were Edinburgh Rugby. They then were called Edinburgh Gunners until September 2006 when they again reverted to Edinburgh. They are one of three Scots sides in the Celtic League with Border Reivers and Glasgow Warriors the other two.

Edinburgh play their home games in Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh EH12 5PJ. Although the stadium has a capacity of 67,500 they usually only open the West Stand, however Heineken Cup home games could increase the demand for tickets especially as they have a good home record in the competition. Edinburgh's best achievement to date has been to make the final of the 2003/4 Celtic Cup and to make it out of the group stages of the 2003/4 Heineken Cup.
