Harlequins who are now based in South West London was formed in 1866 but was originally called Hampstead Football Club. The club decided to change the name in 1870, most likely because the player bass had moved further afield than just north west London. As the shirts already had HFC on them they had to find a name that incorporated the initials. It is said that at a meeting someone produced a dictionary and they went through the options until they came to Harlequins. This met with general approval. This did however cause a split and so some members left and form what is no London Wasps.
Harlequins were a nomadic club for some 40 years with upwards of 15 different home venues, these were all around London and included Wandsworth Common, Wimbledon Park and Putney Heath. 1909 saw the club use Twickenham for the first time and they have been based near there ever since, moving into the current home in 1963 the Stoop.
Harlequins who are a Premiership Rugby Union team also run Harlequins Rugby League from the same base.
