Juan Martin Hernandez will start for Argentina in Sunday’s crucial World Cup clash against Ireland after recovering from a thigh injury. Argentina face Ireland in the Parc des Princes on Sunday, 30 September, with a 1600 BST KO. Hernandez’s return at fly-half means Felipe Contepomi returns to centre, with Gonzalo Pedro Tiesi losing out. Pumas coach Marcelo Loffreda has chosen Gonzalo Longo Elia who will make his first World Cup start to replace injured back row Juan Manuel Leguizamon.
Argentina and Ireland have met in the last two World Cups with the Pumas prevailing in the quarter-final play-off in 1999 and the Irish avenging that defeat in the group stage in 2003. All the pressure this time is on Ireland who need to score four or more tries and defeat the Pumas by more than seven points to go through to the quarter-final stage. A big ask considering Argentina have so far not had their line crossed during the present campaign and have the most miserly defence in the tournament.
