Leicester who are more commonly known as the Tigers play their home games in kit comprising green with red and white shirts. It is thought that they got their nickname either from the brown and yellow shirts that they wore back in 1885 or from a local regiment nicknamed the Tigers after having served in India. Leicester's most famous player to pull on the shirt is without doubt Martin Johnson the World Cup winning captain of England.
Leicester Rugby Football Club was formed in 1880, at a meeting in the George Hotel, Leicester and was an amalgamation of three clubs: Leicester Societies AFC, Leicester Amateur FC and Leicester Alertor. Leicester play their home games at; Welford Road, Leicester LE2 7TR. However they have outgrown the ground and have agreed a deal to share the Walkers Stadium Filbert Way, Leicester, LE2 7FL with Leicester City Football Club, for the big games although the majority of home fixtures will still be played at fortress Welford Road.
Leicester is known the world over as one of the most successful clubs with a fine record including; European Champions 2001/2002, 2000/2001; English Champions 2001/2002, 2000/2001, 1999/2000, 1998/1999, 1994/1995, 1987/1988; English Cup Winners 1996/7, 1992/3, 1980/81, 1979/80, 1978/79. League 1st place finishers 2004/5 beaten by Wasps in the final.
