Melbourne appointed as 15th Super Rugby team from 2011

SANZAR has announced Melbourne as the 15th Super Rugby Team to join the competition when expansion occurs in 2011. The decision for Melbourne over the Southern Kings of South Africa was very much decided because of the greater broadcasting revenue expected from the Aussie teams inclusion.

This will give Australia 5 teams, Brumbies, Weston Force, Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs and Melbourne,

New Zealand 5, Auckland Blues, Waikato Chiefs, Canterbury Crusaders, Otagoa Highlanders and Wellington Hurricanes.

South Africa 5, Bulls, Lions, Cheetahs, Sharks and Stormers.

This does mean that all three nations now have an equal balance of teams, next step bring in the Pacific Islands and Argentina
