The Aviva Premiership Rugby 2013/14 Season Round Two gave us some surprising results.
Friday night and two away wins and by the underdog as well. First up and Harlequins could not withstand the power of Northampton Saints going down 6-13. The game was played in monsoon conditions and handling errors in abundance made it a challenge which Saints with a second half try to James Wilson marked the difference between the two teams. Next and to Sales Sharks who went down 14-15 to Newcastle Falcons this was a duel of the boot and Phil Godman and Rory Clegg won it for the Falcons. Sharks led 11-9 at half-time and must have felt the game was theirs, but penalties in kickable positions left them in trouble.
Three games on Saturday with our first being Exeter Chiefs win over London Wasps 30-26. Half-time here was tight at 16-12 and staying tight until the end. Still in the West country we go to Worcester Warriors who welcomed London Irish. This much to everyone’s surprise went the way of the visitors 18-20. At the break they were all square at 10-10. Last of the Saturday games and we were still in the West country as Bath turned over Leicester Tigers 27-20. The home team were already home and dry at 21-3 at the break. George Ford had a superb game with his distribution and kicks from the tee.
Sunday and so to Allianz Park and the might of Saracens. We expected a full on tussle up front. It was not to be as a red card for Nick Wood for stamping reduced Gloucester to fourteen men. They fought a valiant fight and even led 10-12 at the break, this was it though as they ran out of steam eventually going down 44-12.
So four wrong calls with Quins, Sharks, Warriors and Tigers all losing.
