South Africa Rugby has its roots in games played between civilian and military teams in 1862 at Green Point Common, Cape Town. The first union was Western Province founded in 1883 and the South African Rugby Board it self was founded in 1889. South Africa played their first international against a British Isles touring side in 1891 in Port Elizabeth losing 0-4. Though South Africa compete against the European sides frequently. Their primary competition is the tri-nations against Australia and New Zealand played on a home and away basis every year. South Africa who are also known as the Springboks play their home games at several venues, 1 of which was the World Cup winning; Ellis Park, Curry Street, Doornfontein, Johannesburg 2028. Other regular venues include Pretoria's Loftus Versfeld, the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, the ABSA Stadium in Durban, and the EPRFU Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The Springboks have a proud record in world rugby and the pinnacle must be winning the RWC in 1995 in front of home support. They have also won the tri- nations on several occasions and are a force no matter who they play.
