The Stags play their home games in red and white shirts, with white shorts and red socks. As with most of the unions some well known names in the game have donned the shirt, for example: Steven Pokere, Simon Culhane, Jeff Wilson, Jimmy Cowan, Clarke Dermody, Justin Marshall and Corey Flynn.

The Southland Rugby Union also known as the Southland Stags was formed in 1887. Their home ground is the 17,000 capacity Rugby Park Stadium, Invercargill, New Zealand. Southland are a feeder union to the Highlanders Super 14 franchise and have a reputation for offering stiff opposition to visiting national teams such as France and Fiji, plus the British and Irish Lions.
