We feature today The first of our Fan sites, the South African Super 14’s Lions Supporters Site: transvaal.co.za
In 1996 site owner Walter who has always been a huge Lions supporter, realised that there were only 2 websites with South African rugby content, one was the SARFU website (now at www.sarugby.net, and one was a Western Province supporter website that doesn’t exist anymore), so he decided to start his own and as he worked for an IT company, he was able to host his site on one of their servers. Roughly 3 years ago he was able to acquire the domain name www.transvaal.co.za, where Transvaal is the old name of the Lions rugby team, so it made absolute sense for him to use that domain name.
The website is packed with information about the Lions, history, results, match reports, latest news plus the past two seasons Walter has been given media accreditation, so he is allowed to watch all the home matches at Ellis Park (Johannesburg) in the media centre. They also added a link to his site on the official site, which he appreciates very much. This year they started sponsoring match tickets that he was able to give away on his site, so he has given away 3 double season tickets as well as something like 300 match tickets. The site has now bloomed therefore into a regularly used forum and information point for all things Lions, with general information about the Currie Cup, Super 14 tables, pictures and competitions.
We asked Walter for his Lions all time fifteen and he gave us:
