Super League XVIII Play-Offs Week Three and Wolves end Giants dreams, whilst Warriors the Rhinos.
Thursday night and Warrington Wolves took a well earned but narrow win against Huddersfield Giants 30-22. We had picked Huddersfield to continue their good form but it was Warrington who held the cards all the way through this game and thus ended the Giants season.
The result means that Warrington will appear in Super League’s Grand Final for the second consecutive season after beating the League Leading Shield winners in a tense semi-final. Warrington were justified in choosing Huddersfield who they have beaten in the last eight meetings.
Joel Monaghan with two tries and Simon Grix with one in the first period allowed the Wolves, to go in at 18-10 at half-time. The second period and the Giants stayed in touch until Grix’s second score with five minutes to go sealed it for Wolves shutting Giants out and taking the plaudits.
Friday night and Wigan Warriors did enough to beat Leeds Rhinos 22-12.
Wigan Warriors remain on course to do the double after overcoming the reigning Super League champions Leeds Rhinos in a close run semi-final. The Challenge Cup winners scored three second-half tries to secure the win and right to meet Warrington Wolves in next Saturday’s Grand Final at Old Trafford. It will be the first time the two North-West giants have met in a major final since Wigan beat Warrington in the 1990 Challenge Cup final at Wembley.
The only try of the first half came after five minutes when Tomkins released Richards and he found centre Iain Thornley with an inside pass. However Leeds, champions in each of the last two years, drew level at 6-6 having been 6-0 down at the break thanks to Joel Moon’s terrific try four minutes into the second half but that was as good as it got with the three tries killing them off.
So we have the finalists Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors.
Not very good as we could not get either result correct. Here are the results:
