After a stunning year in 2012 with Canterbury in the ITM Cup which saw him finish at the head of the Top Tryscorer’s list at the end of the season, three in front of his nearest rival, Johnny McNicholl will look to make his Super Rugby debut this season as a member of Todd Blackadder’s Crusaders side.
A member of the Crusaders’ wider training group in 2012, McNicholl’s chances of featuring in the 2013 campaign have increased since Zac Guildford’s withdrawal from the squad, and his ability to cover both wing and fullback, combined with his high work-rate and exceptional finishing skills make him the front-runner to fill that spot.
Courted by Blues coach John Kirwan after his scintillating performances in the ITM Cup the Canterbury-based organisation would have been relieved to retain the services of the promising 22 year old, who plays his club rugby with the Sydenham side along with fellow-Crusaders Tyler Blyendaal and Nepo Laulala.
McNicholl made his debut for Canterbury in 2011 in a Ranfurly Shield match against North Otago, but it wasn’t until last year that he cemented his place in the side, his tally of ten tries contributing greatly as the champion Canterbury team secured an unprecedented fifth consecutive title.
