Heat therapy has a multitude of uses from aiding recovery due to knocks and bruises through to relieving muscle strains and pain and rheumatic or arthritis pain. Rugby players will find heat an invaluable aid to speeding recovery and returning to contact sport.
There are a variety of methods of speeding recovery, right from the application of cold after contact sport through ice baths or similar through to the use of freezing sprays or ice packs to relive immediate pain to allow players to continue in the field of play. Cold or ice therapy is typically used for immediate relief and before the application of heat.
As with all treatments, hot and cold therapy should be used with caution and only if you understand what you are doing or have been given medical advise as to how to proceed. For all instances of injury take advice from your Physio or Doctor.
