The Wales national rugby league team played their first international match in January 1908 at Aberdare, Wales, against New Zealand Winning 9-8. Wales who are nicknamed the Dragons have a history of supplying players into the Super League and hence do not have any teams locally in the top echelons of the game.

Wales failed to qualify for the 2008 World Cup losing to Lebanon, probably one of the lowest points for the team who have appeared in three contests, reaching the semi-finals in 1995 and 2000. In November 2005 Wales took second in the European Nations Cup, losing to France in the final at Carcassonne. Wales were ranked 10th in the RLIF list in March 2008.
