The magpies play their home games in strip of black and white hooped jerseys, with black shorts and socks. The away strip is all white. Two All Black greats from the past have donned the shirt, they were: Kel Tremain and George Nepia. Rugby World Cup winning Zac Guildford is a recent star to have featured for the Bay.
Hawke's Bay Rugby Union was founded in 1884. They play their home games in the 14,000 capacity McLean Park, Napier, the scene of many memorable games such as the British Lions in 1993 when Hawke's Bay proved victorious.
Hawkes Bay has a very good Ranfurly Shield record with 21 successful defences between 1966 and 1969 as well as 24 defences from 1922 to 1927. They have not reached such heights recently but are a foundation union of the Air New Zealand Cup, which started in 2006. They are currently a feeder union to the Hurricanes Super 14 franchise.
