After several unsuccessful attempts to establish a Super Rugby team in South Africa's Eastern Provinces, the Southern Kings were finally granted entry in to the competition commencing in 2013, at the expense of the countires' worst performing franchise in 2012, which turned out to be the Lions.

The Southern Kings draw players from a catchment area made up of three provincial sides, the Eastern Province Kings, the Border Bulldogs and the SWD Eagles, and play their home games at Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The Southern Kings play their home games in a shirt which is predominantly red, with black and gold highlights. These shirt colours are taken from the provincial sides and for their debut season in Super Rugby were produced by Puma.
