The North Harbour Rugby Union was formed in 1985, when clubs broke away from the Auckland Union. North Harbour or just Harbour as they are known play their home games in North Harbour Stadium, a 19,000 capacity stadium in Albany on Auckland's north shore.

Harbour who are in the catchment for the Blues Super 14's franchise cover the districts of North Shore City, Rodney district and part of Waitakere City. The side has only held the Ranfurly Shield once to date, however they did beat Crusaders to take it but then suffered the ignominy of losing to Waikato by 52-7.
