Otago play their home games in strip of blues and yellow shirts, with blue shorts and socks. Some real greats in the game have pulled on the colours and a few of those are: Stephen Bachop, Josh Blackie, Carl Hayman, Byron Kelleher, David Kirk, Josh Kronfeld, Chris Laidlaw, Laurie Mains, Anton Oliver, Taine Randell and Jeff Wilson.
The Otago Rugby Union was formed in 1881, making it one of the longest standing unions in New Zealand. Otago previously played their home games in the 35,000 capacity Carisbrook Stadium, Dunedin, the stadium which was the union headquarters was known as the house of pain. In 2011 the stadium was replaced by a new purpose built indoor venue for the Rugby World Cup, meaning games would no longer be affected by Dundeins weather.
Otago who supply players to the Highlanders Super 14 franchise reached the semi-finals of the 2006 season of the Air New Zealand Cup. Finishing in 7th in 2007. The union was blighted by financial difficulties in 2012, but a plan was structured to save the Union and continue their participation in the ITM Cup.
